Description
An account of the resource
Sharon Kowalski and Karen Thompson were partners in St. Cloud, Minn., for four years when, in 1983, Kowalski suffered massive brain injuries in an automobile accident. A court named Kowalski’s father as legal guardian with the understanding that Thompson would have visitation rights; however, the father cut off Thompson’s visitation rights and Thompson sued. Ultimately, after many years, the Minnesota Court of Appeals finally ruled in favor of Thompson as legal guardian, a significant victory for gay rights.

REMEMBER THE PAST – CELEBRATE THE FUTURE / 1969-1994 STONEWALL 25
Description
An account of the resource
The Stonewall Rebellion was a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations protesting a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, on June 28, 1969. The patrons of the bar – largely trans women of color and homeless youth – reacted against pervasive harassment by the police, and in so doing launched the modern LGBTQ rights movement. The first march (that would eventually become known as a Pride march) took place the following June in New York City, and today Pride is celebrated each June all over the world. This button was distributed as part of the annual Pride celebration in Boston in 1994.

EQUAL JUSTICE: MARRIAGE FOR ALL / MAY 17, 2004
Description
An account of the resource
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision in Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health found in a suit brought before it by Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) that same-sex couples had the right to marry. Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, writing for the majority, stated that the state’s constitution (originally written by John Adams) “affirms the dignity and equality of all individuals. It forbids the creation of second-class citizens.” Massachusetts was the first state to sanction same-sex marriage.

Description
An account of the resource
Boston's Other Voice was an LGBTQ-themed radio magazine that ran from February 1981 to November 1989. The show was created by Don Latulippe, public affairs programming director at WROR-FM 98.5 (the FM sister station to WRKO-AM, both owned by RKO General), and psychotherapist Dennis Iadarolla.
The show was hosted from 1981-1985 by Dennis Iadarolla and from 1986-1989 by Peter Stickel. Don Latulippe hosted an interview with Stickel during this period, as well.
According to Peter Stickel, these recordings of the show were rescued as the station was sold and the show cut due in part to the public affairs program requirement ending during the Reagan administration.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Laura McMurry was born in Troy, New York, and grew up in Oklahoma and Idaho, before
receiving her undergraduate degree at Reed College in Oregon. She moved to Boston in the
mid-sixties to join Harvard’s graduate program in biology, receiving her degree in 1971. In
1969, McMurry became involved with the newly-formed Boston chapter of the Daughters of
Bilitis. McMurry was active in the Daughters of Bilitis from 1971-1975, at one time serving
as secretary.
Through the Daughters of Bilitis, McMurry also became involved in political action, including
protesting anti-sodomy legislation. In the 1970s McMurry became involved in many Boston
gay and lesbian organizations such as the Gay Speakers Bureau and the Gay Community
News.
In spring of 1970, she participated in Come Help Us Celebrate, and spoke at the first Boston
Pride Celebration.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one box of loose papers, newspaper and journal publications, and
typescript and carbon copies of correspondence. The bulk of the material dates from 19721975. Three letters written by John Kyper in 1973 have been removed and placed in
Coll.39: Gay Legislation Collection.
DESCRIPTION OF SERIES
Series I:
Personal
The first series consists of writing, correspondence, and an interview. The
paper by McMurry entitled A Non-Transsexual Looks at Transsexuality is typed
on the verso of a scientific paper and the second page of McMurry’s book
review of Male Homosexuals: Their Problems and Adaptations by Martin S.
Weinberg and Colin J. Williams. The first page of this review is found on the
verso of notes for the Gay Speakers Bureau (Series II Folder 8).
McMurry’s correspondence related to the military dismissal of Barbara
Randolph and Linda Watson from Fort Devens includes correspondence with
Massachusetts senators.
2
Notes from an interview of McMurry conducted by Libby Bouvier on May 18,
2003 are also included in this series.
Series II:
Material of gay and lesbian organizations (Cambridge Gay Neighbors,
Gay Male Liberation, Gay Speakers Bureau, National Gay Task Force,
Otherfund)
This series consists of correspondence, flyers, pamphlets, notes, and
newsletters related to Boston gay and lesbian organizations and the National
Gay Task Force, which was based in New York. There is extensive material on
two groups to which McMurry belonged: The Gay Speakers Bureau and
Otherfund.
The Gay Speakers Bureau was founded in 1971 and operated under the
auspices of the Homophile Community Health Services. The organization
coordinated speaking engagements for members of Boston LBGT groups to
speak about the experiences of gays and lesbians. Material includes flyers,
correspondence, notes, reference material, and information sheets, as well as
financial information recording the distribution of speakers’ fees. The
Community Service folder contains brochures about volunteer organizations,
material which was presumably collected by the Gay Speakers Bureau. The
verso of the notes includes the published calendars of the Daughters of Bilitis
and the first page of a book review by Laura McMurry (see Series I).
Otherfund was founded by Ian Johnson 1974 and Laura McMurry served on
the community board. Otherfund's mission was to serve as a self-described
“Gay United Fund,” raising funds and then distributing them to projects and
organizations that benefited gays and lesbians. The material consists of
funding proposals submitted by organizations such as Daughters of Bilitis, Fag
Rag, Fenway Community Health Services, Gay Community News, and
Homophile Community Health Services. The General Folder includes notes on
the Board's funding decisions. McMurry stated, in a 2003 interview that
generating sufficient funds for this organization was difficult, and is unsure if
the awards were ever granted.
Also of interest are surveys that Cambridge Gay Neighbors sent to local
politicians, seeking their position on various issues of interest to the
Cambridge LGBT community.
Series III:
Newspapers clipping and other media concern LGBT issues
This series contains newspaper and magazine articles, as well as photocopies
of articles. Of particular interest are newspaper clippings regarding the
Army's dismissal of Sergeant Leonard P. Matlovich, Pfc Barbara Randolph, and
Private Deborah Watson. Randolph and Watson were stationed at Fort
Devens, Massachusetts and discharged in 1975 after revealing their
relationship. Laura McMurry's correspondence with senators regarding
Randolph and Watson can be found in Series I. Also see the article in It's
Time December 1973 (Series II, Folder 11).
Other articles range from Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons The Realities of
Lesbianism to tabloid material, such as I Married a Homosexual. The
3
magazine article, The Transsexuals: Male or Female was originally placed next
to McMurry's piece: A Non-Transsexual Looks at Transsexuality.
The series also includes a list of Boston media contacts and bibliographies on
gay and lesbian issues.
Series IV:
Miscellaneous fake newspaper
This series contains a fake, old-fashioned newspaper, which includes the
headline “Laura McMurry Wins Nobel Prize.”

Coll. 037: The History Project's Bar Collection Finding Aid
Description
An account of the resource
Boston’s gay subculture developed in tandem with Prohibition, where speakeasies became natural gathering places for gay individuals who were already leading a clandestine life. The History Project’s Improper Bostonians notes, “Bars and other gathering places gave previously isolated individuals the opportunity to experience a modicum of freedom, which helped offset the constant threat of arrest, extortion, or loss of employment and the strain of leading double lives,” (p. 162). At this time, bar exteriors were usually discreet, with unmarked doors and anonymous facades. When Prohibition was repealed, gay patrons continued to frequent many former speakeasies, along with hotel lounges, neighborhood bars, and nightclubs, drawn to places where sexual preference was openly acknowledged. Patrons, however, visited such establishments under constant threat of police raid and arrest, which served to foster the solidarity and sense of community that characterized the bar scene of the late 1940s and 50s. By the 1960s, gay and lesbian bars grew in number and patronage, reflecting a larger cultural shift of oppressed groups rising up and demanding recognition. By the 1970s, the disco scene served to bring gay lifestyles into the mainstream, as disco-owners recognized the buying-power of the gay community and sought to encourage gay patronage.
The material from the Bar Collection has been gathered by patrons and employees of local bars and has been donated to The History Project with the intention of providing a more comprehensive history of the social life of gay men (and, to a smaller extent, women) via the bars they frequented.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Michael Riegle, journalist, gay liberationist and prisoner rights activist, was
born in 1943 in Gary, Indiana. The son of a steel mill worker, he attended
Knox College where he received his Bachelors Degree; he later received his
Doctorate in the psychology of language from the University of Minnesota.
Upon receiving his Doctorate, Riegle taught at Franklin and Marshall College
and ended his teaching career at Cornell. Throughout the 1970s, Riegle
traveled extensively through Europe, primarily Italy and France where he
worked as a translator, English and children’s tutor. Fluent in both French
and Italian, Riegle maintained an avid interest in language and continued
studying Russian, Spanish, Greek and American Sign Language until his
death. In 1978, upon his return to the United States, Riegle became
involved with the anarchist paper The Fag Rag and became part of the Gay
Community News staff in 1979. Riegle expanded the newspaper’s policy of
providing free penpal ads to prisoners and began a program providing gays
and lesbians behind bars with legal and health information. Riegle was an
active advocate for prisoners and published on the subject extensively in
GCN. He became a part of the Redbook Prison Book Program and advised
the American Friends Service Committee and the AIDS Action Committee on
the concerns of prisoners. Mike Riegle died on January 10, 1992 after a long
struggle with AIDS.
-Bronski, Michael and Amy Hoffman. “Obituaries: Michael Riegle.” Gay
Community News Vol. 19 No. 26, January 19-25, 1992.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
2
The Mike Riegle Papers contain a variety of printed media, including
newspaper articles, magazine clippings, whole newspapers and magazine
issues, published essays, bibliographies, advertisements, pamphlets,
newsletters, comics, fiction and poetry all related to the research and
collective interests of Gay Community News journalist Michael Riegle.
Although the collection consists primarily of clippings and other collected
materials from various gay and mainstream media from 1973 to 1990,
Riegle’s handwritten research notes on a variety of subjects can be found
throughout, including those used in preparation for a review of Michel
Foucault’s History of Sexuality for Gay Community News.
Among the clippings, the collection also contains many non-English articles
from European magazines, primarily Italian and French. In addition to the
foreign language material, researchers should be advised that some material
in this collection is of an erotic nature. Included in this collection are also a
few statistical reports from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the
Department of Justice regarding anti-Gay Violence from the mid 1980s.
Other political materials focus on issues related to family and children,
especially gay fathers, education, feminism, and rights vs. liberation.
Information regarding his work on gays and lesbians in prison can be found
in Coll.1.2. A portion of the Mike Riegle Papers has also been removed to
create collection No. 54, a collection of newsletters and flyers regarding
Black and White Men Together and Men of All Colors Together.
DESCRIPTION OF SERIES
Mr. Riegle’s personal papers are divided into four series, People, Subject
Files, End of Life, and Personal Papers. The first two series, People, and
Subject Files, are both acting as a series of subject files. These series are
further broken up into subseries based on subject, and as established by
Riegle himself. All subseries and folders are arranged alphabetically, and
items within folders are arranged chronologically where applicable. The first
series of this collection is made up of files related to specific individuals of
interest to Riegle including Carrie Dearborn, whose subseries includes
correspondence, and Ellen Willis. The second series is a collection of subject
files, mostly clippings and collected materials, ranging from topics like
abortion, to education, history, stereotypes and violence.
The third series in the collection, End of Life, consists of cards, letters,
poems, and thoughts of Mike Riegle and his friends during his final days. It
is hard to decipher who the author is of many of the pages in this series. The
materials have been left in the same order as they were received. Folder
3
titles were taken from the various groupings of papers, which are assumed
to be arranged by Mike Riegle.
The fourth series in the collection, Personal Papers, consists of letters,
greetings cards, photographs, bank statements, rental agreements and
other items that give a further glimpse into Mike’s life.

Fluent in both French and Italian, Riegle maintained an avid interest in language and continued studying Russian, Spanish, Greek and American Sign Language until his death. In 1978, upon his return to the United States, Riegle became involved with the anarchist paper The Fag Rag and became part of the Gay Community News staff in 1979. Riegle expanded the newspaper’s policy of providing free penpal ads to prisoners and began a program providing gays and lesbians behind bars with legal and health information. Riegle was an active advocate for prisoners and published on the subject extensively in GCN. He became a part of the Redbook Prison Book Program and advised the American Friends Service Committee and the AIDS Action Committee on the concerns of prisoners. Mike Riegle died on January 10, 1992 after a long struggle with AIDS.

The Mike Riegle Papers contain a variety of printed media, including newspaper articles, magazine clippings, whole newspapers and magazine issues, published essays, bibliographies, advertisements, pamphlets, newsletters, comics, fiction and poetry all related to the research and collective interests of Gay Community News journalist Michael Riegle. Although the collection consists primarily of clippings and other collected materials from various gay and mainstream media from 1973 to 1990, Riegle’s handwritten research notes on a variety of subjects can be found throughout, including those used in preparation for a review of Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality for Gay Community News.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Boston Lesbian and Gays Against the Right (BLAGMAR) and its parent organization,
Lavender Resistance, were groups formed in the last half of the 1970s to negotiate between
issues relating to the LGBT community and the concerns of leftist politics. Lavender
Resistance, active from 1976-1979, was primarily a discussion and study group that focused
on defining this relationship, and because some members wanted a more action-oriented
environment, BLAGMAR was formed to meet this need in 1978. BLAGMAR specifically was a
reaction against the emergence of the New Right, a political movement of evangelical
Christians, headed by people like Anita Bryant, that actively targeted the gay and lesbian
community.
The records of the organizations reflect the political and activist LGBT community during one
of the Gay Rights Movement’s most active periods. Perhaps most importantly, these
records, particularly the meeting minutes and discussion notes, are very relevant for any
study of how gay and lesbian issues related to socialist and progressive politics, and how
certain members of the community chose to approach this relationship. The group’s records
represent an intellectual and economically progressive approach to LGBT issues. Lavender
Resistance, a socialist-feminist voice in the gay community, was particularly invested in the
study of the historic interactions between race, class, gender, and homosexuality in a
capitalist environment, while BLAGMAR focused on current political trends and activism.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one box full of loose papers, newspaper and journal publications,
eight sheets of manila paper, and a decorate fitted sheet used as a banner. The large
sheets of manila paper, used like posters, feature the agenda for the 1979 BLAGMAR
theatre piece written in colored marker. The cloth banner is also decorated with colored
marker.
2
Lavender Resistance met on Thursday evenings, and the typed or handwritten meeting
notes run unevenly from 01/06/1977 to 08/17/1979. Each week the group discussed
assigned reading on topics such as separatist lesbianism, child sexuality, imperialism,
racism, and the New Right, and these photocopied reading materials, including essays and
articles, were collected with the meeting minutes from the corresponding week of
discussion. The collection also includes the internal organizational documents, such as
typed or handwritten member contact information and lists of goals, as well as materials
authored by the group, such as flyers, letters, and position papers. Also present are
materials collected on related organizations, including letters, position papers, flyers, and
media notices, and materials that reflect the range of issues important to the members and
interests of Lavender Resistance. These mostly photocopied materials relate to feminism,
socialism, current events, and issues relevant to the LGBT community.
BLAGMAR also met on Thursday evenings, and the mostly handwritten meeting notes run
from 03/25/1979 to 03/31/1980. Though assigned reading materials are present in the
collection, there is much less than was present in the materials of Lavender Resistance.
Most of these photocopied readings relate to the New Right and LGBT activism. Again, the
collection includes the internal organizational documents, such as lists of members,
descriptions of goals, and notes on planning done outside of regular meetings. BLAGMAR’s
organizational documents intended for dissemination largely relate to the group’s active
stance against the Briggs Initiative in California, and include letters, position papers, and
flyers. Documents that are more general or focused on other issues are also present.
Again, BLAGMAR collected the materials of related organizations, such as letters, position
papers, and flyers. The materials that reflect the interests of members and the group are
overwhelmingly related to LGBT activism and culture. A distinctive feature of the BLAGMAR
papers is the large collection of materials related to LGBT literary culture. Photocopies of
poems, plays, and literary essays were presumably collected as BLAGMAR prepared a
theatre piece, “Up on the Roof,” that was showcased Sunday, May 31, 1979 to mark the ten
year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The large cloth banner and eight manila sheets
were used as posters to record the event’s agenda.
An unusual part of the collection is a folder that binds materials from the 1981 New England
Lesbian and Gay Conference. The folder contains letters, flyers, and informational materials
presumably gathered at this conference. This will be included in the collection of BLAGMAR
Organizational Materials.
