REACT!!!
·women, Where Are You?

Remember New D r leans!

For several weeks now, the female
~ontingent at the Friday night danc·es
at the Cbarles Street Meetinghouse
has not bben very impressive. In all
honesty, there have been almost no
representatives except for the few ( 5)
regulars.
Gay Pride Week was a diffe r ent
story. Because the week emphasized
unity, there was an unusually large
number of women, and from the jubilation that permeated th e room it
se emesf like all the folks wer e having
a good.time. What is difficult to und erstapd is why we can't get together
with our gay brothers the other 51
weeks in the year.
WE! are all opnress e d in our gayness, and yet w e continue to lead our
separ~te lives . If we feel the exist- ·
ence of a sexist· attitude among our
gay br,others and do nothing to resolve
the issu e, how can we expect to grow
as a constructive force in changing
society? By eliminating the f act that
gay men are real and not dealing with
them, we h ave r etaine d our narrowminded h eterosexual conditioning.

The senseless killings of gay and

bar in New Orleans recently represents perhaps th e gr e atest act of
genocide perpetuated against us since
the witch burnings in Salem. We must
not let this incident get shuffled to
th e back of the n ewspaper. Everyone
should be writing to their local naper,
as well as Senators, CongressDeople
and the police denartment demanding
immediate justice, and insisting that
this situation be dealt with.
Letting this slip by would not only
be in ignorance of the peonle killed
and injured, but would also convince
other erratics who may be nlanning
'the same thing that it's easy to get
away with. We must unite and defend ourselves against the senseles s
hostility of thos e who f eel our e xist.
I
· ence a threat.

Dear GCN :
What is being done to set up an
on-going rap session for m en such as
DOB h as for gay women? I'm cert ain that there is a lot of interest in
such ~thing. Tu es d ay seems like a
good night; . Ch a rl es Str e et Me etinghous e a good place. (I don't think
rolle r skating at the Bal- A- Rou is a
substitute for this! ) All that is really
n ecessary is an announc em ent of time

and nlace in GCN, and the people who
arrive could get it together by themselves (hopefully).

<text>Gay Community News began in 1973 as a local newsletter featuring a calendar of events for the GLBT community in Boston and New England. Its news coverage quickly expanded, and in a few short years, it was a national publication in both scope and readership. During a critical period in the gay liberation and the lesbian and gay rights movement, GCN was a nationally respected, and oftentimes controversial, source of information about the community and a catalyst for political debate. GCN published as a weekly from 1973 to 1992, and as a quarterly until 1999.<br /><br />The collection below contains a selection of digitized issues and articles in Gay Community News. A full run of the physical newspaper is available to view in person at our archive.
