Left to Right: Tim Sweeney, Executive Director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Marion Barry, Mayor of Washington, D.C., and Meryl Friedman, Lambda board member, at Lambda's 7th annual award dinner October 18 at the Sheraton Centre, New York City. Mayor Barry was honored for his courage and ability to reach out and understand the common oppression of other minority groups. Other honorees were Mary Morgan, the first openly lesbian judge in U.S. history, Vito Russo, author of The Celluloid Closet, and the groups Custody Action for Lesbian Mothers (CALM) and Black and White Men Together/N.Y. Lambda is a 10 year old organization of lawyers involved in protecting and furthering the civil rights of homosexuals.
