A name given to the resource
8 Black Women Why Did They Die?
Date
A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource
circa 1978-1979
Description
An account of the resource
The title on the cover is "8 Black Women Why Did They Die" but there is a stylistic treatment to note that this is a possible third version of the pamphlet, with the word "Six" having been crossed out and the number "7" having been crossed out. This implies that first six, then seven, and now eight Black women have died.
On page 1: "This pamphlet was prepared by the Combahee River Collective, a Boston Black Feminist Organization." The interior pages of the pamphlet include a poem called "with no immediate cause" by ntozake shange that appeared in her book "nappy edges," which was published in 1978 by St. Martin's Press. The authors also provide guidance on self protection and a list of community organizations and resources related to violence against women.

Description
An account of the resource
Members of the Combahee River Collective take part in a March and Rally for Bellana Borde (15 January 1980) to protest police brutality directed at communities of color in Boston, Massachusetts.
In December 1979, Borde was arrested for trespassing and assaulting a police officer (charges that were later dropped). In turn, Borde filed complaints of assault and battery against a Boston police officer involved in her arrest--a two-day trial ended in acquittal of the officer. The Combahee River Collective was a Black feminist collective active in Boston from 1974 to 1980. They are known for developing the Combahee River Collective Statement.

Description
An account of the resource
Gay Community News was a weekly journal published in Boston from 1973 to 1992 by the Bromfield Street Educational Foundation. It was an important resource for the LGBT community, reporting a wide variety of LGBT related news.

The GCN photograph collection housed at The History Project in Boston, MA consists of approximately 1500 photographs, most of which are black and white prints. The photographs were taken for use in the journal, many appearing in the publication, and donated to The History Project after the closure of the journal. History Project staff members were responsible for creating three series of photographs, categorizing the images by 1. Organizations, 2. People, and 3. Demonstrations.

The History Project also houses a complete run of the journal Gay Community News. A selection of the photographs from the Organizations series is available on this Omeka site. The photographs are from a wide variety of organization in the Boston area, ranging from protest groups, to musical groups, to political groups, to theater groups. The entire Organizations series has been digitized and may be available through email by contacting The History Project at info@historyproject.org.

As of Feburary 2024, approximatley 150 more items were digitized and made accessible including from the "People" and "Staff" series in celebration of GCN's 50th anniversary. Digitization and description were completed by Marco Lanier with the support of the Visual Resources Assoication's 2024 Internship Award.
