ACLU Gay Rights Chapter: "UPGRADING GAY & LESBIAN VETERAN DISCHARGES"
Description
An account of the resource
This pamphlet, created by the ACLU of South California Gay Rights Chapter, instructs veterans on how to apply to upgrade their discharge to honorable discharge, if they had been discharged "less than honorably" due to being (or being accused of being) gay or lesbian. The pamphlet explains that in 1976, Congress passed a law allowing all less-than-honorable discharges (or "undesirable discharges"), if "based solely on homosexuality," to be upgraded to honorable discharges, if application is made before January 1, 1980.
This upgrade was important for veterans in part because a dishonorable discharge disqualified them from medical benefits from VA Hospitals. If upgraded, benefits were retroactive to the date of application, according to the pamphlet.
This pamphlet was in Charles Shively's possession likely because his partner, Gordon Copeland, had been dishonorably discharged from the Air Force on April 3, 1953, In Charles' papers are also copies of letters written by Gordon to the Air Force asking for a hearing of his undesirable discharge due to "alleged homosexuality," as well as a letter to the Boston V.A. Regional Office requesting information on his VA benefits, both dated July 3, 1979.

In this letter Allan refers to a prior decision to "get out of the Navy" - "to get out on you know what," but says that he has now changed his mind: "I figured it wasn't worth it... So I told my executive officer I was lying. So he tore up all the papers on me. So I guess I'll be in for 2 1/2 more years (egad! that sounds long)." Dated November 1, 1973.

"Dear Skip,
This is a letter about you and me – strange that this should be the first letter I have ever written you.
It’s twelve o’clock midnight now and I have just finished washing my hair – I hear the screen door opening downstairs. If only it would be you but I know it won’t. This has become a set pattern that started a long time again – last Xmas.
We have been married a little over a year now but have never really known each other. We have never told each other what we really want out of life or what is deep down inside us. I so wish that our marriage could have been like your parents’ – no secrets, no doubts, sharing everything with each other, fears, dreams, hopes, and happiness. "

Title

Letter "Dear Skip" about the end of Gordon and Carol's marriage, no date
Description
An account of the resource
This letter was filed in Gordon Copeland’s correspondence folder in the Charles Shively archives. Written by hand in cursive, with faded pencil, on yellowed stationary, it is addressed “Dear Skip,” and is not signed or dated. However the stationery is embossed with the line “Out of Carol’s Inkwell” and there is a note on the back that reads “This is part of a letter I wrote you the night before I moved to Miller’s.” Based on other letters in the archive, “Skip” seems to be Gordon Copeland (Charles Shively’s future partner), and Carol is Skip’s wife. The writer explains what sounds like a decision to leave a neglectful husband:
"Dear Skip,
This is a letter about you and me – strange that this should be the first letter I have ever written you.
I have always been jealous of your friends because they have always come first – first with your time and first with your money. I needed you so much while I was pregnant but you were always too preoccupied with your friends and I was hurt so because you could afford to buy liquor, entertain your friends, and gamble but could never afford to buy me a maternity dress. You often wondered why I loved [Pepper?] so – when I felt bad, hurt, or was just plain lonely, she was always there – she was the only comfort I ever had.
The first few months we were married I thought you were the most thoughtful man I had ever met and I was truly surprised how well we got along with each other. But now you seem so cold and aloof.”
The letter cuts off here, but on the back there is a note that reads “This is part of a letter I wrote you the night before I moved to Miller’s.”

Title
A name given to the resource
George Chapin Scott and Edward F. Bernier Collection
Description
An account of the resource
George Chapin Scott was born August 1916 in Heath, Massachusetts, the only child to Myria F. Chapin and John H. Scott. He first contacted The History Project in 2000 to donate a large collection of local lesbian and gay newspapers, including: The Guide, Tommy’s and Next. He lived on Elm Street, Davis Square, Somerville, and died April 12, 2005 at age 88. He was a member of Boston Prime Timers, a 25-year member of the Monday Night Bowling League, and founding treasurer of the Somerville Committee for a Response to AIDS (SCRA). He was the friend of Robert J. Publicover who was a longtime Somerville resident, a publisher of Somerville Journal, the 1992 recipient of Bay Windows Newspaper Award, Mr. Gay New England, and founder of SCRA. Publicover was also the executor of George’s estate. Among other friends of George’s were William Wood of Medford, Rudy Corvo of Boston, Bruce Carpenter of Granby, Jack Sheehan of Quincy, James Cyr of Quincy, Robert Hanson of Provincetown, and Larry Hannay of Somerville.
Edward F. Bernier, or Eddie, was born in Pennsylvania in 1930 and was George’s partner until he died in an auto accident in Wellfleet, Cape Cod, in early 1961. He was a hairdresser in Central Square, Cambridge, on Massachusetts Avenue. This collection contains a large number of photographs of Eddie as well as photographs taken by Eddie.
After George passed away in 2005, all of his stuff was thrown out, perhaps by his landlord. A woman in the neighborhood, Julie Katz, found his collection on the ground by chance, and picked up as much as she could carry. She later contacted The History Project regarding the collection. For this reason, most of the materials lost any original order, and the collection was neither well organized nor comprehensive. Photographs constitute the largest part of the collection. There are a number of photographs of Eddie, as well as old family photos from the late 19th century. Included in the collection are letters, address books, business cards, pamphlets, certificates, high school journals, and news clippings.

We know that our family held within prisons is particularly at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, so we raised over $30,000 to send to our members in prisons across New England. These letters are from those members telling us what they spent that money on (lots of soap!), thanking us for the donation during this crisis, and looking for connections outside prison walls. LGBTQ people know we cannot rely upon the government to help us in times of crisis, we are each others' help and we survive through mutual aid. </span>

Description
An account of the resource
Boston's Other Voice was an LGBTQ-themed radio magazine that ran from February 1981 to November 1989. The show was created by Don Latulippe, public affairs programming director at WROR-FM 98.5 (the FM sister station to WRKO-AM, both owned by RKO General), and psychotherapist Dennis Iadarolla.
The show was hosted from 1981-1985 by Dennis Iadarolla and from 1986-1989 by Peter Stickel. Don Latulippe hosted an interview with Stickel during this period, as well.
According to Peter Stickel, these recordings of the show were rescued as the station was sold and the show cut due in part to the public affairs program requirement ending during the Reagan administration.
