INTRODUCTION
There has been a long-standing need in the Boston gay community for improved communication between the various gay organizations and the gay individual~ The lack of coverage in the .. straight''' press has added to this problem of
getting necessary information to our community. Gay groups have atten.pted to
overcome this problem by newsletters to their members, but this has lead to
duplication of efforts, with vast portions of the community left uninformed about
events until after they have passed.
The Gay Community Newsletter is meant as a means to solve this problem. The purpose will be to list all of the events and information of interest to
the gay comn.unity in one publication. This will not be a literary publication.
We are fortunate to haveseveral already serving the community.. We feel
weekly publication will be necessary to fill this' need for quick current information.
This newsletter is published in cooperation with the many gay organizations in the area, with special starting financial support from the Meetinghouse
Coffeehouse and the Charles Street Meetinghouse •.
The necessity of being self-supporting will require a small donation for
the newsletter. Distribution has not yet been completely worked out. but we anticipate that a large portion of this will be through subscription. (Note subscription
form on the following page).
We ask for the aid of the gay community in inforn.ing us of information and
events for publications. Our njailing address is:

Description
An account of the resource
Gay Community News began in 1973 as a local newsletter featuring a calendar of events for the GLBT community in Boston and New England. Its news coverage quickly expanded, and in a few short years, it was a national publication in both scope and readership.
During a critical period in the gay liberation and the lesbian and gay rights movement, GCN was a nationally respected, and oftentimes controversial, source of information about the community and a catalyst for political debate.
GCN published as a weekly from 1973 to 1992, and as a quarterly until 1999.

·women, Where Are You?
Remember New D r leans!
For several weeks now, the female
~ontingent at the Friday night danc·es
at the Cbarles Street Meetinghouse
has not bben very impressive. In all
honesty, there have been almost no
representatives except for the few ( 5)
regulars.
Gay Pride Week was a diffe r ent
story. Because the week emphasized
unity, there was an unusually large
number of women, and from the jubilation that permeated th e room it
se emesf like all the folks wer e having
a good.time. What is difficult to und erstapd is why we can't get together
with our gay brothers the other 51
weeks in the year.
WE! are all opnress e d in our gayness, and yet w e continue to lead our
separ~te lives . If we feel the exist- ·
ence of a sexist· attitude among our
gay br,others and do nothing to resolve
the issu e, how can we expect to grow
as a constructive force in changing
society? By eliminating the f act that
gay men are real and not dealing with
them, we h ave r etaine d our narrowminded h eterosexual conditioning.
The senseless killings of gay and

bar in New Orleans recently represents perhaps th e gr e atest act of
genocide perpetuated against us since
the witch burnings in Salem. We must
not let this incident get shuffled to
th e back of the n ewspaper. Everyone
should be writing to their local naper,
as well as Senators, CongressDeople
and the police denartment demanding
immediate justice, and insisting that
this situation be dealt with.
Letting this slip by would not only
be in ignorance of the peonle killed
and injured, but would also convince
other erratics who may be nlanning
'the same thing that it's easy to get
away with. We must unite and defend ourselves against the senseles s
hostility of thos e who f eel our e xist.

Dear GCN :
What is being done to set up an
on-going rap session for m en such as
DOB h as for gay women? I'm cert ain that there is a lot of interest in
such ~thing. Tu es d ay seems like a
good night; . Ch a rl es Str e et Me etinghous e a good place. (I don't think
rolle r skating at the Bal- A- Rou is a
substitute for this! ) All that is really
n ecessary is an announc em ent of time
and nlace in GCN, and the people who
arrive could get it together by themselves (hopefully).

The Charles Street Uni·
versalist Meetinghouse has
been in financial difficulties
for several years. Historically, it has seen its role as a
church in support of human IStlc causes. It is best
known to the gay community
as the closest thing we have
to a Gay Community Center,
with a wide variety of gay
events taking place daily.
The Meetinghouse is also
involved in such areas as
support for the arts, peace
, ~ ~s-;-fre e- s efl.o-o~ , '''! o r>;1 '? n .'
movement, black history, and
many others.
Many of these causes have
not been popular, especially
the gay activism. Because of
the receptive role of the
church and the strong direction of its minister, Randy
Gibson, this has not daunted
the programs. These pro·
grams, however , have not
produced the necessary re ·
venues to keep the Meetinghouse open. In fact, the
very survival of the Meeting·
house is in question. While
those who disapprove of
these programs have failed
for years to prevent this
humanistic role, lack of fi ·
nances may prove fatal to
the church.
Presently, the Meeting·
house is $13,000 in debt,
which can no longer be put
off. An additional $12,000
is directly ne e ded to con tinue and devel op programs
for the church.
The Meetinghouse Coffeehouse was started to pro·
vid e a congenial social out·
let for gay and s1:raight
communication, as well as,
financial support for the
church. As can be seen
in last week's financial
.statement in GCN, the
Coffeehouse has not yet
become profitable .
In an attempt to raise
the $25,000, a mammoth
auction festival has been
planned for Saturday July
14th , 10AM to midnight.
(More info. under "Doings").
In an urgent plea for
help , Randy Gibson has
listed the following as ways
to save the Meetinghouse:
(1) Support the auction.
Auctionable items are desperately needed. If you
don 't have anything yourself, solicit from others
and bring it to Randy at
the Meetinghouse. Tell
others about the auction.
.4-
ore
house. Patronize it! Vol·
unteer waiters and wait·
resses are needed. It is
only being staffed, presently,
by the dedication of a few
over-worked people. One
day or night a week is all
that is needed.
(3) Financial donations
are, of course, more than
welcome .
(4) Explore joining the
church.
(5) People who can do
plumbing, plastering, and
bricklaying are needed to
repair the build in g. No
funds are available to hire
professionals. (A local
painter has volunteered to
do some exterior painting ·
more help is needed.)
(See our "React" column)
The Gay Community News
on behalf of itse lf and its
readers, wishes to gratefully
acknowledge the generous
support of an anonymous
donor who has given subs·
tantial financial support to
this effort .
NIW DRLEAIIS:
TRAGEDY CINTD.
Of the fifteen people ad·
mitted to the hospital in
New Orleans, five have been
released . Th e person who is
in the best condition will
have to remain in the hos·
pital at least another month
and a half. The other nine
people can expect stays of
two or more months. Most
of these will be in outpatient care for therapy and
plastic surgery for at least
the next year.
July 28th is the target
deadline for, those able to
donate blood. If you are
interested in helping the
sisters and brothers by a
blood donation, please con tact Penny Perrault at the
Metropolitan Community
Church at 266-7491.

A large round of applause
was the response to an an nouncement concerning
"improvements" that will

"RAP SESSION FOR BISEXUALS AND GAYS"
Make the world a better place to live. Experience the
satisfaction of working and sharing with other gay people in
making our community a free place __to live and love .
Older gays, as well as young, women and men, black and
white, conservative and radical, skilled professionals and unskilled people; we need and welcome you regardless of your
political ideologies or sexual identities. We are all part of
a sexual minority.
We desperately need new people with new energies, ideas ,
and perspectives. We urge and welcome you to become actively involved in developing a cohesive alternative to the oppressive straight enviro-nment in which we live. We can no longer
afford to submit to a straight society that constantly monitors
and invalidates our behavior, thus preventing us from reaching
our full human potential.
If you have never been able to decide how and where to
get involved perhaps this will be enough of a guide to get
you started in a meaningful direction.
The Metropolitan Com munity Church will sponsor
a picnic at Crane Beach.
Everyone is welcome , bring
your own food. If you

PUT AN END TO VIOLENCE

SAVE THE MEETINGHOUSE
The Ch arles Street Meetinghouse has been, and is, there

FOCUS
July 9, 1973
Nicholas Deutsch
I was puzzled to see listed on Skip Rosenthal's list of Gay
Pride Week expenses something described as "loan from
Coming Out." As I explained to Skip, as well as to other
members of the Gay Pride Week Committee, I had originally
committed this money on the part of the show without consulting the full cast and staff -- something which I had no
right to do. When several cast members (properly) raised objections, I told Skip that the $200.00 was henceforth to be
considered a personal donation on my part, and was no longer
connected with the production in any way.
I am bothered that this information was ignored, and that
members of the company -- who are not to blame for the
mix-up -- have been hassled by questions about the "loan."
I hope more care can be taken in the future by everyone in
regard to communications and checking with all people involved in an organization . . . we have better things to spend
our time on than financial matters; but unless we're more
open with each other, we'll always end up with confusion
and bitterness over matters of this sort.

To The Editor,
It was brought to my attention that there is a large segment
of gay people that no one in Boston involved in the gay
liberation struggle is aware of. These people are the gay
blacks.
Why haven't these people been stimulated or motivated
into our community? Fact: There are as many gay blacks
proportionally as whites. It is apparent there is more of a
problem on their behalf as there is a strong heterosexual
element in their soc iety.
Why have these people chosen to be aprt from our
society?
S incerely,
Philip W. Hemmings

DID YOU Sf£!
In th e July issue of
"Playgirl" maga z ine they
e x amine the problem of
th e le sbian mother. The
art icl e d e als with the dif-
ficulty a mill ion and a half
lesbian mothers have - legally,
socially and personally .
Several psychiatrists, in cluding Dr. George Weinberg, author of "Society
and the Healthy Homosexual ," favorably comment
on the offspring of gay
mothers.
In case you haven't heard,
several weeks ago the Su preme Court decided that
all regulation of "pornography" should be left to
local authorities. In response to this, local theatres
have reverted to showing
softcore sex films rather
than those with genuine
action. An industry spokesman informed me that the
companies which own the
neane a-re-rurmi·n·g- s·c are d ,
not from any direct threats
of police action against gay
films, but from the mere
possibility of such action.
For those of us who enjoy seeing gay porn films
this situation is virtually
intolerable. The softcore
films available are old , in
bad condition, and of extremely low quality. They
represent exploitation of the
worst kind, and are no substitute for films such as
BIJOU, L.A. PLAYS ITSELF, or THE EXPERIMENT .
If the theatre owners are
afraid to run hardcore films,
whv can't thev merelv
change to a non-sexually
oriented mode of operation?
These theatres obviously
want our business, or they
wouldn't show gay films to
begin with; if they want to
keep our business, they'd
better give us something
other than garbage.
Now, if the stagehands
will remove the soapbox,
I'll move on to PINK
FLAM lNG OS (Fri. & Sat.
Midnight at the Charles
East).
*** * ****** ***
Well, here we are at the
Charles East, watching 97
minutes of camp, lewdness,
and perversion . I first saw
PINK FLAMINGOS seven

Gay Community News (Publication) Collection

& IRDTHEI MURDERED
RY
As of this writing, details on the
recent murder and assault of two
patrons of ttie Other Side are still
somewhat nebulous. The story
from different credible sources
is as follows . . . The two victims
met shortly before the bar closed.
They were approached by the six
assailants and invited to a party
with promises of "booze, some
pot and a lot of fun." The
eight men left the bar and drove
around the areas of Forest Hills
and Jamaica Plain .
The driver of the vehicle
stopped near a rear entrance to
the Arnold Arboretum at South
and Bussey streets. The eight
sat and conversed until one of

were repeatedly beaten and struck
with clubs, knives and an assortment of other weapons . The victims were then robbed of cash ,
wallets, jewelry and watches.
The six men dragged the two
bodies to a sewer main at the
edge of the Arboretum . The
two men were then dropped
through a 27-inch opening into the
deepest section of the sewer. The
cover to the sewer was replaced
and the six fled.

The Homophile Community
Health Service is in immediate
danger of closing due to serious
financial difficulties .
The non-profit agency, incorporated as Counseling Service,
Inc., has served the gay community for three years. It has provided gays with low cost therapy,
as well as providing a broad range
of educational and social welfare
programs. The staff -- composed
of qualified professionals, paraprofessionals, and mostly volunteers -- has both a local and
national reputation for t he quality
of its services.
It would be a major catastrophe for Boston area gays if
these services (paid for almost
entirely by our clients) had to
be discontinued due to lack of

On monday, July 23rd, the
first meeting of the Gay Defense
Committee will be held at the
CSMH at 7:30PM. The purpose
will be to get people together to
talk about what we can do about
our brothers and sisters who have
been mugged or killed by straights,
and what we can do to defend
ourselves in case of such an assault.
The Defense Committee was
started by people who have been
mugged and are tired of watching
ourselves and others be defenseless during and after such assaults.
They are not into violence, and
feel that most gay people would
prefer to avoid this sort of defE)nse.
The group seeks to explore the
possibilities, and bring some
immediate action and suggestions
to the gay community.
If you have any ideas or would
like to help in this effort, you
are encouraged to attend the
eeting Monday. For more information, call 723-2997 or 2278519.

PICNICS
If you ever want to have a
good (]roup picnic, try Cochituate State Park in Natick on a
Saturday. DOB found at its
Cochituate picnic number two
(Sat. July 14) that there was no
problem finding empty tables,
whereas on a Sunday you may
not even get into the park, it is
so crowded. As always, there is
plenty to do -- swimming, open
space for softball or Frisbee,
trails for walking, and cookout
stoves. To get there take turnpike west to exit 13, route 30
east one and a half miles; park
is on the right. Admission is
$1.00/carload or 25 cents/person.
DONATIONS
Another kind, generous person
has given to GCN an anonymous
donation to cover the costs of
this issue, and we are very grateful. We, however, are still in
need to money to absorb the
costs of new improvements in
the paper. Please, if you are
able to help, any donation that
you are able to give will be
greatly appreciated.
ATTENTION:
WE ARE BEING SLAUGHTERED
The violence perpetrated against us as gay people has become an
outrage. We are being kidnapped, murdered, stuffed into sewers,
stabbed and assaulted again and again.
The hate comes from their society - we are the misfits, they are
threatened by our love and try to destroy us with their hate. The
incident of brutal attack and murder that recently occured in the
arboretum, where six so called "men" assaulted two gay brothers
and stuffed them into a swere, where one died, is an example of
the hostility generated against us.
They kill us because we love, maim us for they fear our freedom. We love, laugh, play, and sing. They torture, kill, scorn and
hate. The question is: will the real sickies please stand up?
AS WE STAND BY
Last week it was the Meetinghouse. This week another vital
gay organization may collapse through lack of f inancial support.
One thousand dollars must be raised this week if the Homophile
Community Health Service is to stay alive. Again we must not
allow this to happen. Again we must give. Please!

TO THE EDITOR :
This writer had occasion on Wed., July 11th to watch the pro-
~;a~ MASS. REACTION on Channel 7. It was the inten_t of this
program to limit its scope to sports, since the panel consasted of ~he
station's sportscasters, save the moderator. On at least two occasa~ns
in the course of this show individuals of or for the Gay Communaty
tried to interject their subject into the program. They were shut off
without benefit of a reply to their inquiries.
DisrtJptio,n, regardless of the form it takes, serves only to lose
potential champions for our side and increases the massive number of
people we are forced to convince. Forthosewho watched the CATCH
44 program earlier in the month and saw this one have a good idea
which behaviorism made the better impression. True, the moderator
helped in shaping the bad portreyal made on MASS. REACTION , but
we certainly presented him the opportunity . . .
Jack Ligruck
(Note: This letter has been edited for inclusion, see the Hossenpfepper Column for anbther view.)
TO THE EDITOR:
Last month's anti-obscenity ruling by the Supreme Court declared that obscenity is to be defined according to loca l standards.
Predictably, purveyors of gay pornography are hit first and hardest.
It seems that there are plenty of localities where the very idea of
male/male or female/ female sex is ample definition for obscenity .
However, there are some places - Beacon Hill, Fire Island, Provincetown, etc. - where local standards are substantially different. It
would be very interesting to see the stores in these areas barred
from selling such "obscenity" as PLAYBOY, ESQUIRE , FORTUNE,
THE PILOT, and THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR . Of
course, this sort of censorship would be no better than that which
attacks gay pornography, but it might serve as the basis for a test
case which would point out the fact that any censorship is a violation of human rights.
M.E.M.
GAY RAPS CONTINUE
by J. Ralf Green
Last week the column dealt
with movies, this week it's television ; I just keep hitting until
somebody listens.
I went to MASS. REACTION
last week, with the purpose in
mind of simply evaluating the
program. Prior to air time the
audience was informed that any
question whatever could be asked;
the presence of the sportscasters
was apparently not to be construed as an attempt at pre-censorship, or direction of the questioning.
.
Throughout the first half,
questions of all types were asked,
and dealt with quite reasonably
by the panel, including the propriety of hiring a queen as newscaster. Then, a specific complaint
concerning coverage of the gay
community was brought up and
immediately put down by Chuck
Scarborough, saying that two
weeks earlier, virtually the entire
program was gay-oriented . He
then called for the next question .
t
Up to that point I was rather
impressed with the show, but I
could not countenance the obvious
attempt to silence the gay contingent. This was the first question of the evening which did not
receive a satisfactory answer and
I could not let it pass unchallenged. My statement several
minutes later that one program
alone does not fulfill their obligation to us was dealt with in
exactly the same way, Scarborough's
response being, "Next question,
please."
If Channel Seven no longer
wants gay people on MASS.
REACTION, they'd better give
us an alternative. If they want
to deal with different topics in
different weeks, they would be
wiser to announce so in advance,
rather than merely load the panel
and expect the questions to be
directed thereby. If the ticket
said "MASS. REACTION - Sports"
I would have been happy to comply ; since it didn't, they had no
right to try to direct our queries.

Where is "Heaven and Earth" ?
If you were one of the people
who tuned in to see "A New
Heaven and A New Earth" last
Sunday we sympathize with your
disappointment. Thoreau preempted Bob and Harry FreemanJones and the Rev. William Alberts. When the station was contacted, they explained that there
were technical difficulties in completing the tape and that they
were l.,mable to finish it for the
sched4led time. It is hoped that
it was, in fact, technical difficulties and not political undertones
that caused the last minute shuffle.
When pressed for the re-scheduled

would be announced. GCN will
let you know of the re-scheduled
date when it is announced.

A twenty year old B.U. student,
was recently robbed and beaten
by two young men who had picked
him up while he was hitch hiking
on Comm. Ave. late at night. The
same vehicle has reported.ly been
involved in similar incidents re·
cently, and particularly preys
on gays because it often frequents "the block". The fol lowing account of the attack
was given GCN by the victim,
Harry Higgins, and-took-place~
on the 7th of July.
Th~mbing on his way home
from a party, Harry was picked
up by two hip-looking guys
driving a flower and grafitti
painted truck. He had to climb
in the front door over the driver
and passenger because he was told
that the side door was stuck.
After driving several blocks on
Comm. Ave., the driver turned
off into the South End and onto
deserted side streets. Harry's
objections to the route were met
with the response that they were
"taking a short cut."
After the driver, called Jack,
began sideswiping cars and went
into a high speed screeching
spin, Harry asked to be let out.
This was responded to with
"You'll get out when we feel
like it". Harry, an acting student,
told them that he was an epileptic
and might have a seizure. After
commenting that they "had a
!J.Jn and could put. him in the
river" as they had "done with
two guys." ,.more threats were
given until they stopped at a
streetlight somewhere in the
South End. At this point they
began beating Harry and took
his money and wrist watch.
Harry stated "they attempted to
put me out of commission but
failed ." Feigning an epileptic
seizure, an occasion where his
acting ability was of great use,
the attackers became frightened,
and he escaped the truck as they
drove away .
Bleeding and torn, Harry made
it to Station Four, where he was
given "a run-around." The only
thing offered was an opportu nity
to wash up. No description was
taken, and no effort made to
apprehend the assailants. The
police could not even give him

Last Wednesday evening (18th)
the driver of a blue pick-up truck
with white block lettering on the
side picked up and attempted to
sexually assault Ms. Nina Kohn
who was at the time hitch-hiking
from the Commonwealth Avenue
area to the CSMH Coffeehouse.
After being picked up, the
driver, described as in his 20's,
about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with
shoulder length curly brown hair,
informed Ms. Kohn that he had
to make a delivery at Atamian
Ford. After "discovering" that
it was closed, he returned to the
truck, pulled out a black-handled
knife and held it to her throat.
When she refused, to remove her
pants for him, he began feeling
her up. Continuing to resist
his advances, the "mad dog"
coerced her to commit what the
police later termed "unnatural
acts."
Ms. Kohn then leapt from the
parked vehicle and quickly left
the scene, crying. She explained
her tears as resulting from her
exploitation as a woman, rather
than from the physical harm.
The incident was reported to
the police, but no further developments are known as of this
writing.

Due to the obvious increase in
violence directed against gay
people, a group of brothers and
sisters have formed a Gay Defense
Committee to explore ways in
which the gay community can
defend itself.
Suggestions of a self defense
course, legal advice, and an information pamphlet on the ac-
tivities of the Committee were
discussed at the initial meeting
on Monday, July 23rd.
More interested people, especially women, are asked to
attend the next meeting on Monday, July 30th, at 7 :30PM , upstairs at the Charles Street Meeting
House.
July 28 from 11AM to 3PM
at the Charles St. Meetinghouse,
70 Charles Street, there will be
a blood donation drive to assist
gay sisters and brothers injured
in the New Orleans fire .
There have been sixty sisters
and brothers who have already
volunteered blood but many,
many more are needed. If possible, please call the Metropolita
Community Church at 266-7491,
sometime before the 28th in
order to make an appointment.
To be able to donate, you
must weigh over 11 0 pounds,
be of moderately good health,
get a good night's sleep before
coming in and be sure to eat
someth ing before donating. The
need for this blood is urgent and

State Senate candidate Mike
Amato, who has won the endorsement of the Homophile
Union of Boston and State
Representative Barney Frank ,
supports the repeal of all sodomy
laws and believes that " gay
rights" fa lls within the domain
of "human rights."
Running for the seat left
vacant by the resignation of
Senator Mario Umana, the
Cambridge resident plans to
introduce legislation to help
alleviate the oppression of gays.
He supports applying the same
standards to public accomodations, the repeal of the " crimes
against nature" and "unnatural
and lascivious acts" sections,
and establishing a uniform age
of consant for sexual acts.
Security clearances, Amato
believes, should be granted to
gays on t he same basis as st raights
On topics of general voter
interest, Amato stands for the
abolishment of prisons in lieu
of half-way houses, abortion on
demand and expanded mass
transportation. He is opposed
to the Park Plaza project.
Mike Amato stated in an interview with us that " The seventies are the most important years
for human rights."

N.E. GAYS
GCN has been both pleased and
surprised by the response we are
getting from gays outside the
greater Boston area. We encourage
gay people from all over New
Engl and , especially those who
have no gay media coverage, to
submit news articles and events

If you feel you are not represented, remember GCN is here
to serve all gay people.
The Homophile Community
Health Service is still in serious
financial difficulties.
Although the non-profit, profess ionally-staffed center has
raised enough money to cover
expenses through the month, they
expect to be back in the same
boat by the first of August. To
date, they have raised approximately $1,000, out of which more
than $700 has come either from
the staff's own pockets or through
their personal contacts.
Money is desperately needed
to continue the work of the
nationally-known counselling service. A finance committee has
been formed with a view toward
long term fund-raising. In the
meanwhile, donations are being
sought from the community.
Contributions are tax-deductable,
and may be mailed to:
HCHS, Room 403, 419 Boylston

The Meetinghouse Coffeehouse still needs volunteers
to wait on customers. A few
individuals are carrying all the
load, and desperately need help.
If you are free evenings,
people are urgently needed Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, from 7 to midnight. If
you have free time during the
day, people are needed every
day except Fridays, but particularly Sundays and Mondays,

In the Sunday, July 22, issue of
GLOBE magazine, there appeared
an article entitled "The Homosexual, the Catholic Church and
Dignity." Taking the form of an
interview, the article featured Fr.
Thomas Oddo, Fr. Paul Shanley
and Brother Bill Modlin, all of
whom are working to b.ring
alienated gays back into the church
which their sexuality forced them
to abandon. The group, Dignity/
Boston, also actively works for
liberalization of the church's view
of homosexuality.

In another branch of the media,
members of the GCN staff appeared on WBUR's GAY WAY
radio program last Thursday (19th).
The discussion dealt specifically
with the paper, as well as certain
other aspects of the gay situation
in Boston, such as the increased
violence and anti-gay sentiment on
the part of the straight community.
ReAr:rI
(Please read Focus On:
for background before reading this editorial)
The fallacy and ultimate danger of allowing the use of the Charles
Street Meetinghouse as a temporary Gay Community Center to deter
us from creating our very own center is that CSMH will not forever
be able to fulfill this function.
CSMH sees its role as supporting humanistic causes. Its support
of the Gay Movement in Boston has come at a time when the community direly needed it, and this support has allowed us to progress
as a community at an incredibly rapid rate. We all owe CSMH and
Randy Gibson in particular, infinite gratitude and admiration.
But the fact still remains that CSMH is not a Gay Community
Center, and in fact, not even a gay church. Our usage of the church
is part of an historical progression, with another group filling our
place as soon as we depart and further fulfilling the Meetinghouse's
historical role.
We must not allow this fortune to deter our struggle for a place
of our own. Now is the time to plan for this center, because raising
the necessary funds will not be easy. The planning and time involved
will be great. A target of less than a year would be unrealistic. The
time to start is now, not when we find ourselves out on the street
again _ Remember, even the most grateful guest will eventually wear
out the hospitality of the most grateful host.
The August 12th meeting of GCC deserves the commitment of all
members of the community who care about our liberation and ever
upward struggle.
(Note: Randy Gibson was given this to read prior to insertion, and
he would like to make it clear that he has notinitiated this move,
and is in no way foisting thjs on the community, but at the same
time strongly agrees With this philosophy arJd feels that it will benefit
the community in the long run.)
ReACf/ONS:
TO THE EDITOR:
One of the reasons I didn't go to New York for the Gay Pride
March was the apparent ambivalence with which the gay organizations
here viewed the march, as expressed via the bus accomodations. It
seemed to me that anyone who went to New York had already made
a tremendous contribution just in terms of the time and discomfort
involved in getting there and back, never mind the time spent while
there (which one could argue was well balanced by the good times
had by all). If the groups here had really wanted to support that
march, they could have subsidized the cost of the buses somewhat,
or at least assumed the risk of any unsold seats for a second bus (the
profits from the dances alone could have underwritten two bus loads
at $5 a head). Instead, the marchers were charged well above cost
($548 collected versus $411 spent) turning a profit equal to well over
half of all the rest of the expenses incurred during Gay Pride Week.
I think that is perfectly outrageous. Further, it was clear to me that
had I offered to give any Boston group a donation of $12, they would
have used it for their projects here, rather than for a " bus scholarship",
indicating that they preferred to see all that money stay in the Boston
area, rather than go to support the New York Demonstration. Maybe
the profit margin on the tickets was an unconscious effort to discourage participation (imagine how many more tickets could have been
sold at $5, or even cost of $9.50).
If GCC makes its $500 contribution, I would hope that the $2.50
overcharge would be refunded to all who went on the bus to New
York, and that an equal amount be set aside to subsideize next year's
bus. With the possibility of a $750 profit for the week , we don't
need to squeeze anything more out of those who donate their time
and energy to the movement.
Stan Tillotson
To the Editor:
As a coffee shop habitue, this writer wonders about and is concerned
with the small percentage of older gays who help make up the daily
total of visitors.
Does fear of being found out still haunt many of the individuals
born in the early twenties and thirties? Do most of them have lovers
and are so blissfully involved in that life that they have no time left
to pay their respects? Or could it be that most of those remaining
footloose prefer the more conservative bar where the stock quotations are the equivalent to a bible reading, and coupon clipping of
bo~ds is the prescribed daily exercise routine?
To you who ha~e read this far and know of any individuals who
shun bars, pass the word that they are welcome at the coffee shop.
There are a few of us here, but we would welcome all who care to ...
Whether they eat at home or out why not plan to have your dessert
and coffee at the shop? For most it is only a short walk or drive
and the rewards will be worth the effort!
Once having been introduced to the place, maybe they'll stay around
and join in the work or activities. Our ultimate goal is equal rights
and it could be these older gays have some ideas that merit discussion.
... Keep knocking on those closet doors, especially those covered with
cobwebs from ages past!

Description
An account of the resource
Scanned clippings from Gay Community News, 1974, about New Words Bookstore.
New Words opened in April 1974 at 419 Washington Street in Somerville and then moved to 186 Hampshire Street in Cambridge in 1976.
Founded by Rita Arditti, Gilda Bruckman, Mary Lowry, and Jean MacRae, they chose the store’s name from a passage by Mary Daly: “Women are hearing ourselves and each other for the first time, and out of that creative hearing emerge new words.”
Noted speakers included Alison Bechdel, Kate Clinton, Lillian Faderman, Leslie Feinberg, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Barbara Smith, and others, including the women of Kitchen Table Press and the Combahee River Collective among other lesbian and feminist presses.
After the bookstore closed in 2002, the organization transitioned into the non-profit Center for New Words. In 2010, the Center for New Words channeled all of its resources to support Women, Action, & the Media, an online network of feminist journalists, authors, and activists.
